welcome to my blog!

My name is Angel More and I am 16 years old. I'm climbing mountains, biking, swimming open water, and doing triathlons to raise awareness for Children International. Children International is an organization that supports children in poverty and I want to raise money to $1 million for Children International’s HOPE scholarship fund—to support 5,000 teens around the world who want to further their education in high school, college, or technical school, so they can escape the cycle of poverty. Follow my blog for updates about my adventures and fundraising.

let's end poverty for children worldwide!

Upcoming Swim: Manhattan Island!

8/4/2019

In a few weeks I will be swimming around Manhattan Island in New York! The swim is 28 miles long! As someone who has lived in California my whole life, I really love New York and may even go to college there. The swim will start at 9:05am, and the whole swim will be in the daylight, so it will be almost as if I get a tour of the whole Manhattan Island! I am really excited for this swim. As soon as I get back from New York, I have school. I am going into senior year, and I am applying to colleges. It's a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun. :D

New Campaign: Angel's HOPE

In the next two years, I plan to raise $1 million for Children International’s HOPE scholarship fund—to support 5,000 teens around the world who want to further their education in high school, college, or technical school. This summer, along with my training, I have been working on my college applications. I know how important education is, and I am so grateful for all the opportunities that I have been born with. I am really excited to start a new chapter in my education journey and be able to learn more about what I am interested in. I want to be able to share my opportunities with deserving, intelligent kids. I HOPE you’ll join me. Let's break the cycle of poverty for children around the world through education.

Estero Bay Attempt

7/27/2019

This weekend I swam 8 hours, 11 statute miles in 53-55 degree water. I was planning on swimming 9/10 hours, 14 statute miles in 58-59 degree water. This was the first time where I was pulled out of a swim, the swim is called Estero Bay. Estero Bay is unexplored water; only one person has done the swim before. I was really excited to swim it because I would have been the first women and youngest person to complete the swim. Starting off I felt good, strong swimming. I was cold in the beginning, but I tried to swim faster, hoping that I could generate my own heat.  After first hour I asked to switch to warm feeds so I could try to get warmed by drinking hot chicken soup. The whole time I felt pretty good, but towards hour 6 and 7, I was getting really tired. My legs were hurting a lot and I was also feeling cold. I knew that I had 4 miles remaining and wanted to push through the pain and the cold. The last hour I just wanted to be done as soon as possible. My crew considered my slowed speed, the cold water, and current pushing against me, and decided to pull me out of the water. Safety always comes first, and my crew believed that pulling me was the safest option. I am glad that they took action before anything bad could have happened to me. The biggest lesson that I learned from the swim was that I am not invincible, and there will be time where I will have to stop my swim. I am going to do this swim again in September, and hopefully with my extra training and (cross my fingers) better conditions, I will be able to complete it!

Our climate is changing, why aren't we?

Today I walked out of school (and then took a train) to march in support of climate justice in SF in front of Speaker Pelosi’s Office. I was amazed at the hundreds of young students from all over Bay Area who came to protest against the lack of action our government has taken to fix our planet. Remember that we only have 12 years to act on climate change before the planet reaches its threshold. This is mine and my generation’s future and we won’t back down until we get change.

I love volunteering at the 24 hour relay. It is always a blast and I am surrounded by amazing open water swimmers. This year I helped kayak, swim (hehe), and cook, among some other small duties.
